IMDEA Nanociencia celebrates European Researchers' Night with three activities

Madrid, 28th september, 2026. European Researchers' Night is a pan-European science outreach project held simultaneously in 340 cities across Europe, spanning some 30 different countries. Since 2005, it has been held on the last Friday of September each year. IMDEA Nanociencia is once again participating in this year's event with educational activities aimed at students in the Community of Madrid.

Virgen de Europa School Visit

Throughout the day, a comprehensive program of hands-on activities was held to bring science closer to the public, beginning with a welcome talk by Dr. Enrique Cánovas.

In the conference room, Koen Lauwaet and Diego Soler led a workshop focused on how a homemade scanning tunneling microscope (STM) works, while Allan Johnson, Ricardo Rojas, and Oscar Benito combined experiments on diffraction patterns with a quick tour of the laboratories. Likewise, Rubén Turo and César Fabro demonstrated the relationship between temperature and color in Lab 223, while Giuseppe, Adhil, and Ammara presented the essential applications of nanoscience in the field of health in the Hinarejos Hall. 

To wrap up the day, a participatory Kahoot quiz on scientific questions was held in the auditorium, which helped liven up the session and keep the young people engaged and curious.

Science in the Face of Natural Disasters - Residencia de Estudiantes

The event, organized jointly by the seven IMDEA Institutes at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid for European Researchers’ Night, brought together scientists and firefighters from the Community of Madrid to demonstrate how science and technology help prevent disasters and mitigate their effects.

The event featured presentations by the research team consisting of Carlos Jesús Bernardos, Cristina María Fernández, Jimena de la Vega, José Aguilar, José Sánchez Costa, Mario Ballesteros, and Milan Prodanovic.

Catch the Light! - Plaza Mayor (UAM)

The activity, organized by the UAM Department of Chemistry for European Researchers’ Night on the Cantoblanco campus, offered the public hands-on experiments to manipulate light, decipher secret messages, and understand how 3D glasses work.

The workshop featured presentations by the research team consisting of Alen Binu Abraham, Alicia Palacios Cañas, Fernando Martín García, Inés María Macías Labrada, Manuel Alejandro Lafargue Wilmoth, Miguel Ángel Díaz Gutiérrez, Raisa González Pérez, and Sergio Sánchez Pinel.

The European Researchers’ Night in Madrid is a project designed to support researchers’ careers. It is held in 40 countries. In Madrid, it is sponsored by the Regional Ministry of Education, Science, and Universities and coordinated by the madri+d Foundation.

IMDEA Nanociencia has participated continuously in the European Researchers’ Night since 2011. Since that first edition, the institute has opened its doors or moved its workshops and talks to public spaces in Madrid on the last Friday of September each year to bring nanotechnology closer to the general public.
